Privacy Policy
Effective Date: 14 August 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how The Culturist (“we”, “us”, “our”) collects, uses, and protects information when you visit theculturist.net (the “Site”) or interact with us — for example, by subscribing to our newsletter, leaving a comment, or getting in touch through our contact page.
We are based in the United Kingdom, and this policy is written to reflect our obligations under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018. If you are visiting from outside the UK, please note that your information will be processed in accordance with UK law.
We try to keep this policy in plain English rather than dense legal language. If anything is unclear, contact us using the details in the “How to Contact Us” section below.
1. Who We Are
The Culturist is an independently run blog. For the purposes of data protection law, we are the “data controller” of the personal information described in this policy.
Contact email: hello@theculturist.net
2. What Information We Collect
We collect information in a few different ways, depending on how you use the Site:
a) Information you give us directly
- Newsletter sign-up: if you subscribe using our “Subscribe” button, we collect your email address (and your name, if you provide it).
- Comments: if you leave a comment on a post, we collect the name, email address, and website (if supplied) that you enter in the comment form, along with the comment itself.
- Contact form / email: if you contact us directly, we collect your name, email address, and the contents of your message.
b) Information collected automatically
- Standard technical data such as your IP address, browser type, device type, pages visited, and time spent on the Site, collected via cookies and similar tracking technologies.
- If we use an analytics tool (for example, Google Analytics) to understand how visitors use the Site, that tool will collect data about your visit in an aggregated, largely anonymised form.
c) Cookies
Cookies are small text files stored on your device. We use them to keep the Site working properly (essential cookies), and — where enabled — to understand how visitors use the Site (analytics cookies). You can control or disable cookies through your browser settings at any time; doing so may affect how some parts of the Site work.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect for the following purposes:
- To send you our newsletter or blog updates, if you have subscribed.
- To respond to comments, questions, or messages you send us.
- To operate, maintain, and improve the Site and the content we publish.
- To understand, in general terms, how visitors find and use the Site (for example, which posts are popular).
- To detect and prevent spam, abuse, or security issues (for example, through comment spam-filtering tools).
- To comply with our legal obligations, where applicable.
4. Our Legal Basis for Processing
Under UK GDPR, we rely on the following legal bases:
- Consent — for newsletter sign-ups and non-essential cookies. You can withdraw consent at any time (see Section 8).
- Legitimate interests — for basic site analytics and security, where this does not override your rights and freedoms.
- Performance of a request — when you contact us and we need to use your details to reply.
5. Sharing Your Information
We do not sell your personal information. We may share information with a small number of third-party service providers who help us run the Site, such as:
- Our web hosting provider, which stores the Site and any data submitted through it.
- Our email/newsletter service provider (if we use one), which stores subscriber email addresses to send updates.
- Analytics providers (if enabled), which help us understand site traffic.
- Anti-spam tools used to filter comment spam.
These providers only process your information on our behalf and are required to keep it secure. We may also disclose information if required to do so by law, or to protect our rights, users, or the public.
Some of the providers above may be based outside the UK (for example, in the United States). Where this is the case, we rely on the provider’s own compliance mechanisms (such as standard contractual clauses or an adequacy decision) to ensure your data is protected to a UK standard.
6. How Long We Keep Your Information
- Newsletter subscriber details are kept for as long as you remain subscribed, and are deleted (or anonymised) within a reasonable period after you unsubscribe.
- Comments are generally kept for as long as the related blog post remains published, unless you ask us to remove one.
- Contact form / email messages are kept only as long as needed to deal with your enquiry, and are then deleted or archived securely.
7. Children’s Privacy
The Culturist is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age of 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
8. Your Rights
Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you.
- Ask us to correct inaccurate information.
- Ask us to delete your information (“the right to be forgotten”).
- Object to, or ask us to restrict, certain processing.
- Withdraw consent at any time (for example, by unsubscribing from our newsletter using the link in any email).
- Request a copy of your data in a portable format.
- Lodge a complaint with the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk if you believe we have not handled your data properly.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details in Section 10. We will normally respond within one month.
9. Keeping Your Information Secure
We take reasonable technical and organisational steps to protect your information, including using a reputable hosting provider and keeping the Site’s software up to date. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
10. How to Contact Us
If you have any questions about this Privacy Policy, or want to exercise any of your rights, please contact us at:
Email: hello@theculturist.net
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example if we start using a new tool or service, or if the law changes. Any updates will be posted on this page with a revised “Last updated” date. We encourage you to review this page occasionally to stay informed.
